Perched
village of blood and gold, Roussillon deserves
well its nickname of “Delphes la rouge ”.
Colours going from the yellow to the red the sharpest
relative frontages of the houses making merge
the walls and the roofs.
The power of the colors flashes back even here
on the environment:
in Roussillon, the trees appear greener and the
more blue sky.
Histoiry :
The first village was built by the Greeks towards
450 before JC. They then imported the farming
techniques of the vine and the olive-tree.
About year 750, the village undergoes the attack
of Buckwheats, then Of Vaud en1541 come to recover
their prisoners.
A little later in 1577, Roussillon will lodge
the cavalry of Henri of Angouleme during length
and painful head office of Ménerbes.
Roussillon will be royalist during the revolution
and the lord of the village will owe his safety
only with the providential undergrounds of his
castle.
The recent history of the village is especially
related to the exploitation of the ochre which,
aprés one flourishing period will see its
decline starting after the First World War. |
