perched village, Lacoste, capped ruins of the
castle of the Marquis de Sade, draw up his original
silhouette vis-a-vis Luberon and with the Ventoux
mount. The village has a beautiful medieval architectural
heritage.
The installation of many artists for several
decades and the establishment of an American
school of sculpture have transformed little
by little into a workshop of giant artist. Maze
of picturesque caladées lanes, Lacoste
is an enchantment for the walker.
History:
The history of Lacoste is marked by two major
events:
the massacre of Of Vaud in 1545 and the presence
of the Marquis de Sade at the 18th century.
The Of Vaud ones were the disciples of Valdès,
a Lyons commercial rich person who decided towards
1170 to make wishes of poverty and to preach
the Gospel in popular speech.
Coming from the Alps, they settle in Luberon
at the 15th century to give in culture the uncultivated
lands, depopulated because of the epidemics
and plunderings.
These courageous peasants carry out a peaceful
life and practise their religion in greatest
discretion. But, in 1545, Meynier d' Oppède
decides to clean the area of the Vaudoise heresy
definitively being based on the stop of Mérindol
which condemned the heretics and their families
to to be stripped their goods, outlaws, to see
flarings. Meynier gathers his troops and presents
himself in front of Lacoste on April 21, 1545.
He finds the doors of the city closed. The lord
of Lacoste, Balthasar de Simiane, concludes
an agreement and Lacostois opens their doors.
Meynier enters the village then and massacres
without distinction catholics and of Vaud. The
village is plundered and set fire to. The castle
and the lords of the manor will be saved in
extremis only thanks to the intervention of
the vice president of the Parliament of Aix.
Two centuries later, it is Louis Alphonse Donatien,
Marquis de Sade who will put Lacoste on the
front of the scene. Property of Simiane, the
village will be bequeathed to Sade at the 17th
century. The divine Marquis will make several
stays with Lacoste since 1765 to be devoted
in all peace to his famous escapades.
Ruined, after many stays in prison, Sade the
castle will sell to the Marquis de Rovère
during the revolution. A few times later, that
Ci will be off-set and the castle will be repurchased
by a former servant of Sade which will strip
without shame the building in order to sell
materials of them. Practically ruins some, it
will survive nevertheless thanks to the courage
of a man, André Bouer, who will restore
it partially.
Today, it is the property of Pierre Cardin who
plans to give again life to him and to make
an arts centre of it.
The Pharaonic site of the careers being next
to the castle is now the framework of the Festival
Costa (Theatre and lyric art)
