Ideally
located between Alpilles and Luberon, Cavaillon
drew its richness from the Durance, transportation
route between the Alps and Méditérranée
since antiquity.
Old city of the comtat of the popes, it played
a major part in the history of the Jews in Luberon.
Equipped with an important cultural inheritance,
the city is also an agricultural center and accomodates
the largest market in early products of France.
Cavaillon is also famous as a world capital of
melon.
History :
Cavaillon seems to have been occupied as of prehistory
as many vestiges found on the commune attest some.
A first oppidum existed on the hill Saint Jacques,
then under the Roman occupation the city moved
in the plain. It bears the name of Cabellion then.
With the Middle Ages, Cavaillon belongs to the
marquisat of Provence and under the command of
Raymond VI of Toulouse, marquis de Provence, will
take the defense of the Albigensians at the time
of the crusade who will oppose them to the papal
authority.
After the defeat of the Albigensians, Cavaillon
will become papal possession.
During the wars of religion, the city will be
devastated by sadly celebrates marquis of the
Adrets and of many religious buildings will be
destroyed.
Cavaillon was a place of asylum for many constrained
Jews to leave the kingdom of France to the Middle
Ages and which found a refuge in the papal possessions.
