Cadenet
is a picturesque village of Provence located on
a rocky outcrop overhanging the valley of the
Durance. A long time the capital of the basket
making of wicker and cane of the south of France,
Cadenet is also the fatherland of two famous characters:
the small drum of Arcole and the musician Félicien
David.
History
:
The
traces of human occupation are very old in Cadenet.
The vestiges of old a oppidum former to the Roman
occupation were found on the commune as of old
troglodytic dwellings located on the yellow zaffre
bar which dominates the village. Some of these
houses besides are still used.
To the Middle Ages, an agglomeration will be built
around a castrum 11th century, then will extend
towards the plain.
The village will take importance quickly and will
enjoy many privileges, in particular the monopoly
of the vat and the river traffic on the Durance,
the right to beat its own currency, a frankness
from imposition comtale and a total freedom of
the trade. At the end of the 13th century, Cadenet
counts approximately 250 hearths. But the economic
crisis of the end of the Middle Ages strikes the
borough hard. In space the one century Cadenet
loses the three quarters of its population.
The city will be rectified little by little as
from the 16th century with the development of
the plain of the Durance. The population will
however know still a period of stagnation at the
18th century in spite of the construction of the
channel of Cadenet. Facilitated by the possibility
of collecting wicker on the edges of the Durance,
basket making will become the headlight activity
of the city; and even thereafter a true industry.
The last workshop with closed its doors in 1978.
Cadenet is the fatherland of the famous drum of
Arcole. The young Andre Etienne was drum in a
battalion of hunters under Napoleon 1st. In 1796,
it was illustrated with the bridge of Arcole while
crossing a channel with the stroke under the fire
of the enemy, beating the load of the other with
dimensions of bank to encourage his companions
to follow it and put in escape the Austrians.
It was decorated with the legion of honor at 26
years and its name is reproduced on the triumphal
arch.
The romantic musician Félicien David is
also a child of Cadenet.
Cadenet will be promoted chief town of canton
at the 19th century, but its role of road stage
will be reduced considerably because of construction
of a bridge on the Durance.

| Ruins
of the old castle:
Built on the old Roman site, the feudal castle
was many times demolished and rebuilt.
It was put at given up bag during the revolution
then and fell quickly in ruin.
It was used as stone quarry during the 19th
century. Its vestiges were the subject of a
restoration and an installation for the visits.
If there remains almost nothing of this castle,
it remains however a place of a strange beauty
and a high place of discovered (underground
troglodytes and arched rooms, well, secrete
ways). An open-air theatre accomodates spectacles
now there.
