Located on both sides Calavon, Apt is the capital of Luberon and the world capital of the candied fruits. But the city conceals especially an architectural heritage of a very great richness which should imperatively be discovered. Brèf, Apt deserves more than one simple dawdling on its famous market of Saturday morning.
Apta Julia was rested by the Romans at the first century before JC. Until this time a large oppidum builds on a neighbouring hill, the hill of Perréal held the role of local capital, its high situation enabling him to supervise the neighbourhoods. In -50 before JC, the Romans reduce the inhabitants from the oppidums in the valleys, more easily controllable. The city is initially installed on an island of Calavon, along via Domitia with a military camp. It will make fast great strides and will count up to 10 OOO inhabitants, practically as much as today.
From year 260, the city will undergo many cruel invasions then will obtain walls to the Middle Ages. The plague will make devastations at the 14th century and the Jews, shown to propagate the disease, will be driven out.
Apt will be touched little by the wars of religion.
At the industrial era, with the arrival of the railway, the industry of ochre, the candied fruits and earthenware will thrive very quickly.
